Hi Howard, If you only want it to look like it is, I would get a small container of denatured alcohol to clean anything that may be on the wood already. This would be things like wax, finger prints you can see and things like that.
Wipe down the areas you want to protect then put on a couple coats of polyurethane. This is clear and will dry to a good protective surface. You will have to choose between satin, semi gloss or high gloss. Another option would be to use a can of my favorite is Bulls Eye shellac. This isn't quite as durable as the poly but will still give you a nice finish. With either one, you will still be able to see the natural wood look. ----- Original Message ----- From: Howard Traxler To: [email protected] Sent: Wednesday, September 23, 2009 6:32 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] finishing a cabinet Hi all, I picked up a "home made" cabinet at a rummage sale. Whomever built it didn't take time to put any kind of finish on it. My wife would like us to finish it leaving the color just as it is with the wood grain showing. Any ideas what we should buy for the finish and the procedure to make it look good? Thanks for any suggestions.
