I have one more thought. My battery charger has a 
button on it that you slide depending on what 
kind of battery you are charging.
I don't know what would happen if the button was in the wrong position.

When my batteries blew, the store offered to sell 
me some electrical contact cleaner, but I made 
them give me a new charger. I had actually 
brought an example of the kind of battery I 
wanted and still they sold me the wrong one. 
However, the store I was in had cameras and the 
camera clearly showed me giving the guy the battery I'd brought with me.
