i've been using that charger for a few years, so I don't know if it just went 
bad, and I really liked that one because it has a small footrpint, smaller than 
the other one I have.

  I've had that experience. My problem was that I 
  was sold non-rechargeable batteries. This was 
  awhile ago when I really didn't know much about rechargeables.

  I suspect that your socket is fine since there was no fire or smoke.
  It would be good to try to figure out what went 
  wrong, bad batteries, bad charger etc.
