Wanted to also point out that "open group" here isn't that well defined.
That is, how was SMILES development in the late 1980s/early 1990s not
an open group lead by a BFDL? As I understand it, Dave Weininger took
input from various people, and corrections and updates, and helped other
implementers; with the goal of interoperability. How is that different
than, say, CML?
Nowadays he doesn't even do chemistry. He's started a recording studio.
Does he or Daylight have obligations to continue the development of
SMILES, and if so, for how long?
