I know this has already been suggested, but I really think that BOINC should make it a priority to make a simple, GUI update and/or download manager within the boinc manager like firefox etc, do. It should probably be off be default, but imo there should at least be an option to enable some sort of auto-downloader to get new versions of boinc (by which I mean the client, the manager and all associated files). The download itself would have to respect all of the network preferences (day of week overrides etc.). The downloader could just deposit the new version of boinc in an arbitrary folder somewhere so the user could install it on their own later. The other thing is that it would be helpful to boinc's CUDA users if they were notified when they have an out-of-date gpu driver/if Nvidia has released a new one for their platform.
