Unfortunately, putting important messages in the messages log stream is a
very good way of having the message ignored completely.

Messages about new versions, and some major problems should probably get an
alert of some kind. Things like download failures and computation errors
come to mind as possibilities.

Windows update provides driver notifications. In particular the last 2
"official" WHQL nvidia drivers won't work with GPUgrid, so you wouldn't
want to "endorse" a version until its been tested. The last thing you want
is everybody to upgrade and find out that it doesn't work.

Certain projects do notify that there are updated versions of BOINC
available. This gets logged with the other messages. Seti is one of these
projects. I guess it depends on what version of the server software they
are running as to if the feature is there and if the project has it enabled
or not.

Maybe we could use the new RSS news feed (when its available) to notify
users of updated drivers and/or BOINC versions.

Cheers,
MarkJ

It's up to nVidia to notify of updates to the drivers.

And I think it's up to the operating system to provide a global way for
programs to notify of updates, like it's already done in almost every Linux

distribution.
