Using SETI as an example, the time to do a work unit basically tracks back to what is being done by other users at Arecibo -- the user who actually controls telescope motion.
Some surveys have been identified as producing lots of "shorties" and others produce longer work, so I'd worry a little about how crunch times can "jump" an order of magnitude without warning. The credit issue is a little different.
