There is a third one. If you have not looked at the thread for more than
the number of posts that you set as the number to display, then all posts
are shown.

There are 2 exceptions where the BOINC forums will load all posts:
1) A post which isn't the first or one of the last N in the thread is
directly linked to.
2) A thread has been inactive for around 5 weeks, at which point the
BOINC forums lose track of the last post read and the thread is marked
as having new posts. If new posts are added to such a thread all posts
have to be loaded (and the first post is displayed rather than the first
new one).
