Didn't we talk about a version control system ages ago? I think this would be a good idea. Reasons?
1) Contributions Let's take site.language as an example. It's easy to spot missing strings and add them. We wouldn't need to write emails for this, Dan wouldn't have to read them and Dan wouldn't have to invest time in low- level tasks a monkey like me can do. ;) 2) Releases A version control system would allow adventurous users to use and test the latest code which has not been released yet. That might lead to more stable releases and less fixing of fixes. Also the sending of code snippets to the list is tedious. You have to tell the file name, the line numbers and manually copy and paste and update the file. The alternative is just grabbing the newest version via the version control system. Let's assume someone is developing a plugin like RSS. He commits the plugin, interested or helpful users check it out, test it, give feedback. Much easier and faster than sending lots of updates to the mailing list or using BoltWire.com for it (until the plugin is released of course). 3) Updates We have many releases and therefore many updates. Currently, you have to read Dan's announcement and for sure Dan forgets to place the direct download link in it. ;) You have to open the website, download your copy, extract it, replace the old system, delete the download. The alternative is to download (and install) the new version via the version control system – a single click or command. 4) Stupid changes ... can be easily identified and reverted. Also I do not expect the few committing people to change things they have no clue of or have not tested. 5) It should be free and easy to set up Have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_free_software_hosting_facilities The only thing to consider is which hosts allow a custom license like BoltWire has. There are probably more reasons but I will stop here. What are your thoughts? Regards, Markus PS: On BoltWire.com I cannot edit my login page. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "BoltWire" group.
