I tried running the sample document with and without the workaround I
suggested through the updated QuickBook and this is the diff I get of

I found no null characters in the output produced by quickbook. The
version with the workaround apparently gives no errors with xsltproc.
So I guess the bug is now on xsltproc...
Time to settle for the workaround?... ;-)
