Good questions.
Yep they are. Hopefully my answers are constructive. And drive
others to comment.
I'll probably be happy with anything you and Joel can agree on.
I think that exactly Joel's point :-) You'll be happy, but someone else
will be angry.
At least you, me, and Joel will all be happy. Who else matters
anyway? ;-)
It strikes me that Joel de Guzman has a powerful head start in documentation
design and users, because much new documentation uses Quickbook defaults.
I think that would be BoostBook defaults. Unless you mean the style that
Joel did for QuickDoc which one can see in the Spirit docs.
Rene
Rivera doing website documentation doesnt fit with that, hence the clash. Is
that a reasonable analysis of the source of the current debate?
Nope :-) I guess it might be a surprise that Joel and I AFAIK both have
similar likes when it comes to style. Which also means we both find the
current BoostBook style plain, although perhaps Joel might use stronger
language ;-) The debate came about with my choice to enforce the
BoostBook like design on all documentation when presented on the website
(through some PHP+regex post processing magic). Because I was going
under the logic that it was basically an already agreed upon style and
everyone *wanted* to use it. When the original BoostBook style talk went
on I stayed far away from it because I knew that my nerves would not
survive the experience. Which I guess is what Joel is experiencing now.
For myself I'd be happy to try out Rene's L & F in my own tentative docs at
least, to see what the fuss is about. How do I go about plugging it in to my
QuickBook stuff? Is there a CSS file I can use?
Not sure it's of much use to do that. Like I said above my style is just
a slightly changed BoostBook style. (But there are many more CSS files
to do it as it's tailored for the website structure)
I think the important question is:
Will developers accept and live with whatever Joel and I come up
with as a new BoostBook style?
If the answer is yes. The Joel and I can go away and work on it. If not,
then our question is what process do we need to follow to get developers
to agree on a design?
