I think the important question is:
Will developers accept and live with whatever Joel and I come up
with as a new BoostBook style?
If the answer is yes. The Joel and I can go away and work on it. If
not, then our question is what process do we need to follow to get
developers to agree on a design?
Well, I guess there's only one tried and true strategy for something
like that.
1) Sneak the changes into CVS in the middle of the night and erase all
history/remains of the old design.
2) Duck for cover.
3) Wait a long time for things to calm down.
4) Enjoy the moment, open a bottle of champagne, celebrate!
Are you seriously suggesting this?
I get the feeling that some Look & Feel discussions on the developer's
list have a bike shed taste to it. To be sure, my suggestion was more of
a joke.
Anyway, I do think we'd be better served with a small group of designers
(e.g., Rene, Joel, ? -- I'm not really suggesting/voting for names)
working together in a benevolent dictatorship. This group would have the
power (and exercise it!) to disregard outside comments. I'm sure they
would be listening to other's opinions. Still, I think, the only way for
something like this to work, without falling into the
design-by-committee syndrome, is if they have free reign in doing it.
So, in the end, maybe I really was serious about it...
Regards,
João
