I get the feeling that some Look & Feel discussions on the
developer's list have a bike shed taste to it.
In which particular aspect?
Endless discussions of little details? Anyway, I'm not really adding
anything constructive here, so I'll just shut up for now.
To be sure, my suggestion was more of
a joke.
Anyway, I do think we'd be better served with a small group of
designers (e.g., Rene, Joel, ? -- I'm not really suggesting/voting
for names) working together in a benevolent dictatorship. This group
would have the power (and exercise it!) to disregard outside
comments.
For all I care, it can be just one designer, but documentation is the
face of the library, and the library author should have a final say on
the looks of hers docs.
Sure. I don't suppose and don't really think any such "committee" would
completely disregard outside comments (I mean, we're all reasonable
people in here ;-). What I wanted to say is that in the end this
committee would have the last say wrt the proposed looks. The L&F are
proposed as a package and should be evaluated in its whole.
As I mentioned in another post, this is never forced onto prospective
users. All of this is CSS based, and you can keep your own CSSs, and
even tweak the proposed ones to your own tastes, fwiw.
Still, I think Boost's interests would be better served if the docs
evolved to be more integrated and the L&F is one visible aspect of this
integration. Consistent content and structure, a common index, more
cross-referencing and articles exploring combinations of existing Boost
libraries would be other aspects of the integration.
I'm sure they would be listening to other's
opinions. Still, I think, the only way for something like this to
work, without falling into the design-by-committee syndrome, is if
they have free reign in doing it.
So, in the end, maybe I really was serious about it...
I definitely think we can do better than your suggested process.
Anyway, I wasn't really suggesting a process and just throwing my .01 €.
So perhaps it was more noise and I apologize for that. I'm all for an
open process as well.
Regards,
João
