   When you get right down to it, this Boston "neighborhood" thing is
   just confusing.  I work in Dorchester but management likes to put
   "Boston" on the stationary, which is confusing because there's an
   identical address in Boston proper, just with a different zip code. 
   Are there any other cities that have similar naming schizophrenia?

These Boston neighborhoods have different names because they used to be
independent towns.  There was a wave of consolidation in the late 19th
century, so I'm told, because it was believed to be advantageous to
"join" Boston at the time.  That also explains street name conflicts,
for streets named in the 17th and 18th centuries.  Because of that, and
because these "neighborhoods" had been independent jurisdictions for
200+ years, the old nomenclature has been a long time in dying.
