Hi Robert,

   a certain amount of heating is fine, and indeed unavoidable unless you 
reduce the current and so increase charge time to more than about 10 
hours.  A 15 degree C rise in battery temperature is absolutely normal for 
these batteries (NiMH) towards the end of the fast charge.  Much more than 
that and I might worry.  And I wouldn't have thought that the battery 
should heat up immediately if it's empty when you plug the charger in - 
how old is the unit? I'm reading these numbers off the battery 
manufacturer's data sheet by the way.

I'd also like to point out that if I took the cooling fans off my PC it 
would probably overheat and die within the hour!  It's just something you 
have to live with in some devices.
