Append mode would allow someone to write in the file no matter where the cursor is and have the text automaticly placed at the end of the file without having to go there. In this mode you would prevent inserting notes where you don't want them. Mary Ellen, This is not the same as the insert file or append to clipboard.

Kathy;
You already can append or go to the end of a file with space with
4,5,6.
Why have a new command when it can already be done?

Kandi, Append mode means that when you start writing again, the
new material will appear at the end where you left off. This was
very confusing for me when I went from the Braille ;'n Speak to a
PC, and also to this BN mPower. Now that I'm used to the mPower,
it's no big problem.
Overwrite is also a Braille ;'n Speak or Braille Lite command,
the "ow" symbol with space bar. You use it to delete and replace
a character. If you did the command twice, you'd have continuous
overwrite.
You can use this command with the BN but I believe just for one
character at a time. It's just as easy, with the BN, to use the
backspace to delete, either by itself or with dots 3-6 and the
backspace.
Hope that makes sense.
Kathy
