Hello,
This message is not meant to be critical of the way people store their data, because that is your choice. However, the message below makes good sense. I am sorry to hear that Mary-ellen lost data, but owning two BrailleNotes, both which were transplanted to an MPower, And having owned one for five years and the other for two, I have never lost data unless I did something wrong. Because of its size, the only thing stored in my flash drive, except of course what HumanWare put there, is the Keymail and Keylist folders and whatever I leave in them. This includes my address list which I back up whenever I make a change to it, and any E-Mails I haven't transferred to an SD or Compact Flash card. I know what I do wrong, but sometimes this happens because I'm not attentive or am typing to fast. When I lose anything, it's because i'm writing an E-Mail, then i finish writing it and get ready to send, but I press the E chord to many times. That's when my message disappears. This is the only time I lose data but the BrailleNote is not the culprit. That entity is me! Never having been a personal computer user, i often heard computer users griping about losing data because they hadn't backed it up. This motivated me after receiving my first BrailleNote never to save anything I wanted to keep in its tiny little flash drive. Although I have lost flash drives and have had to send my devices back to Concord for new ones, I have never lost data. Everything I consider important is on either a compact flash or an SD card. A 128 mb card will hold lots of data, but I use 512 or one gb cards, which are well worth the price if they keep my data safe. People with computers should remember that your computer has many, many gb of flash drive memory, while your Braille or voice note classic has about 32 mb and your MPower has only 128 mb. I suggest that you invest in a compact flash or SD card or like some people on this list, get one of those thumb drives which I'm told can store up to 8 gb of data. Also, as a habit I erase my cookies after going to the internet. Again someone who is very knowledgable of the Braille and Voice note told me that downloading data from the internet uses flash memory that requires a reset and erasing my cookies. I do it, and have never lost any data. Perhaps as someone said, it's your particular unit that's not performing correctly, but I don't think all the Braille and Voice notes are at fault. This is just my nickel's worth and is not meant to start any lengthy discussions on how or where to store your data. That's still your choice.

Subject: re: [Braillenote] Data loss

Wait just a minute here. I think it's extremely premature to
start jumping to conclusions. Yes, I'll agree that it's most
unfortunate whenever one loses valuable data, but to take it a
step further and suggest that this is a chronic problem with the
BN family of products is just plain uncalled for. I for one have
yet to come across a situation involving my voicenote wherein I
have inexplicably lost data. I have owned my current unit for a
little more than a year now, and my previous unit I had since
2003. As distasteful as some of you may find my proposition, I
suggest that we resist the urge to make the assertion that this
is a chronic problem with the BN, and likewise refrain from
suggesting to those that perhaps were thinking of purchasing a
braillenote or voicenote that they should think twice before
doing so. While I feel for those persons that have experienced
the aforementioned problem, I will say to those of you that are
considering purchasing one of these units, that I personally have
never experienced the previously referenced problem, and I
encourage you not to decide against the BN predicated upon the
unfortunate experiences of a select few. Just my opinion. Isaih
