Hi,

This kind of thing with battery changing is exactly one of the reasons I
am an advocate for places around the country and in other parts of the
world to be trained and licensed by Humanware and other blindness
companies to be able to do repair work. As I think I've said before on
this list, it would be much more convenient for a person to be able to
take, with authorization from Humanware, their product into a local or
somewhat local (within 50 miles) place to get repairs done. And, they
wouldn't have to be without their units as long.

Hear hear! Several years ago, the batteries in my Braille Lite died and I was only able to run the thing on AC power. I called Freedom, who told me that it would cost me at least two or three hundred bucks plus shipping charges and take at least a week or two to get the batteries replaced, not to mention the time it would take to ship the unit across country and back. I nixed that real quick, and went to a local battery store. Sixty-five dollars and forty-five minutes later I had the machine up and running with a new battery pack.

The battery life in my Braille Note is steadily dwindling and I don't relish the prospect of the down time to get it fixed, even though I'd only be sending the BN up to Concord from Los Angeles. I would really like to be able to take it to that local battery place and have it fixed the same day.

Tom
