A major problem with dealing with sales tax is that some states allow their
cities and counties to TAG ON their share of the sales tax. Here in Denver,
our state sales tax is 2.9%; the City and County of Denver tags on another
3.12%. In addition to these, we also pay sales tax to help fund public
transportation--in this wise, the state collects 1.2% and the City and
County of Denver collects 0.5%. Total sales tax adds up to 7.72% in Denver
County.
Cities in surrounding counties do tag theirs on as well and this sometimes
also includes a County sales tax to. For example, the City of Aurora, which
is a STONE THROW away from my office, falls into two different counties:
Arapahoe and Adams respectively. In Aurora Arapahoe County, the sales tax
adds up to 8.1%, which includes 3.3% for the city, 0.2% for public transit
called RTD, 0.5% for Arapahoe, and the difference is for the state itself.
I once had my BrailleNote Classic repaired, and Humanware TRIED TO CHARGE ME
sales tax for Westminster city in Adams County. I had to fight it.
Sincerely,
Olusegun
Denver, Colorado
