I do not understand. VoiceOver is what displays the information on the display, just like Jaws would show text on a display; the display is not independent of the screen reader at all, so you need the reader (v o in this case) to use the display. Besides, v o is very good, though I have only semi-tested it on an iPad, not a full iMac with Snow Leopard.
As to hooking things up, I think you just use usb or bluetooth. For bluetooth, pair the bn with the mac, activate activeSync, and there you go; start terminal and it should work. Of course, refer to the manual of your iMac for the steps involved. Does Snow Leopard support braille yet? I know iOS4 (for the iPod and iPhone) does, but I am not sure if that support extends to the full macOSX10.6 yet. Something to look into. Perhaps someone on the blindGeekZone list can provide better instructions.
