The book is in BRF format, and I'm downloading it to a PC
card. And yes, I have erased and re-downloaded the book several
times.

First, what is the type of book you are downloading (brf or
DAISY)?
Second, to where are you downloading your books (internal Flash,
memory card, USB flash drive, etc.)? Third, Have you tried
downloading
the book after erasing the first one to see if it fixes the
problem?
