Hi, I've taken the liberty of changing the subject line and would
appreciate it if people could please do the same when they see that a
thread has completely changed direction.

When we estimate battery life, it's done based on an average of typical
usage patterns. For example, we're mindful that people will generally
leave the unit on but idle for some of the time, only use the Braille
display sometime, etc.

Batteries generally are expected to be at their best on average for about
18 months. In general, I'm advised that we get around 13 hours of
continuous speech in talk-down mode on a BrailleNote, a VoiceNote is about
3 hours more. Now if you have peripherals connected to the unit, such as a
compact flash card or even more significantly a Microdrive, that figure
will go down.
