Thanks Dennis--I've used a heavy duty timer since day one.  I'm wondering if 
people saw my update yesterday--it wasn't the switch after all.  The pump had a 
dead short in it.  (I must have abused pumps in a past life and they're back to 
settle my karmic debt, ha ha...).
