I do not know. I do not use water softening and do not use the device that came with my Brewtus2.

I posted this question on another site and although it got plenty of views, not a single person offered their opinion. Perhaps this group here is a bit more enthusiastic.

I use a cartridge based Bestmax water filter/softener system for my Expobar. It is supposed to remove hardness etc. that causes havoc inside the machine. I'm at the stage where I will need to replace the cartridge and they are not cheap. They are incredibly convenient but not cheap.

Of course there are also the salt based systems that do not need replacement cartridges. They only need replacement salt which is pretty cheap.

What are the thoughts on the two systems? Is the salt system really that much of a hassle to recharge?
