I descale every year or so. I mix a solution of citric acid into the water tank (when it was still a pourover machine), or in an external tank now (because it's been converted to rotary). I then run this into all of the machine, i.e. both boilers, group, etc. I try to soak the small outlet tube by the drip tray in a shot glass full. I let it sit for a couple of days, and I will prop the machine at different angles, i.e. leaning left, right, front, back to get the citric over the water line, where most scale happens. I keep it hot during this process, but not sure you need to. I then flush with clean water a bazillion times (it will come out blue, don't freak out), and if it's been a while, I may repeat the process. Eventually it will run clear again.
One note--I almost never use the hot water wand, and so only pull steam from that boiler. That means I get really high mineral content in there as it concentrates. If you're in this situation, drain that boiler a few times whenever you do your backflush routine, i.e. maybe weekly or whatever, and that will keep the minerals at bay to some extent. Citric acid is available at Spice Barn or many homebrew shops. You can mess with your friends by getting them to taste it--like the most sour lemon drop ever... best, bmc On Apr 19, 2013, at 11:15 AM, [email protected] wrote: > > > On Friday, April 19, 2013 12:01:14 PM UTC-5, Bobcat wrote: > You'll still need to descale twice a year (assuming near daily use) .... > > > Bobcat, good feedback and thanks for the comments about descaling.
