Thank you Herman & Ira.

I had an intermatic mechanical timer and that's the one that went bad.  One 
of the forks seems to have burned a bit so there's no saving it I think.  I 
picked up a lower wattage (1250 i think) cheap GE mechanical timer - the 
only one my local store had in stock - and that's working for now.  I'll 
likely move to a digital intermatic (dt620 or newer model if available) at 
some point.

It's good to know that only one of those 975 watt burners run at a time.
