That all sounds good and likely. So did the crush washer fit between the
adapter and the original tubing? If so, maybe they are mismatched sizes and the
crush washer fills the void.

I would check with a few places. Most likely, I think you’ll find a washer at
an auto or motorcycle parts shop. Take the old one with you for size. These are
used for sealing oil/trans/fork/etc drains and come in a multitude of sizes.
They should cost pennies to a dollar or two. You could also try places like
McMaster/Carr, Grainger, Tacoma Screw, etc. If you call with ID and OD and
thickness, they’ll send it to you.

Teflon tape—look at the package, it will tell you minimum number of wraps. For
white/thin, I think it’s 5 or 7; for yellow, I think it’s 3. There’s no real
harm to using a bit too much (within reason)—it will just pile up as it gets
pushed out of the way when you make the connection. Note—if you have to break
the connection, you need to use something sharp (i.e. tip of a knife, paper
clip, etc.) to carefully clean out as much of the old tape as possible from the
threads, then re-wrap with new. It’s a one-shot deal, like your crush washer.

Best of luck,
bmc
