What you are experiencing sounds a bit like what happened to me earlier 
this month. Long before this month, I had some sporatic problems with the 
steam boiler. I opened it up, tried to take some readings, and it magically 
started working again. However, it failed again. What it ended up being was 
a faulty thermostat. Easy to replace but harder to diagnose. 

Take a look at my thread from 'Winnipegger...' from February 5. OzAnon did 
figure it out but there was a lot of great advice along the way. In that 
thread from Feb 5, Oz even included a picture of exactly what needed to be 
replaced. It was spot on.
