I recently tried to read it for the second time and just gave up when I
got to the section with the Eaters. It's just much too long and
episodic, and even a bit boring in parts.

Yes. I thought it was a bit disappointing but I haven't yet worked out
why. The consensus over on the Culture list is that it's great (people
keep telling me that it's much better the second time round so I
suppose I'll have to find time to read it again in the near future). I
don't think that any of the later books reach the dizzy heights of _The
Player of Games_ and _Use of Weapons_.
(Each time Brin-L starts talking about Banks, the Culture seems to end
up talking about Brin; isn't that strange? I suppose it's just the
innate perversity of those of us subscribed to both.)
