Clarification: An independent group of Republicans is running an ad where
Nader critiques Gore. At no point does the ad endorse or promote Ralph
Nader.
Secondly, I have to support Michael on this one...... and not out of some
cynical attempt to boost Bush.
In 1994, George Pataki was locked in a very tight race with Mario Cuomo for
Governor of New York. Had I been elgible to vote at the time (I was 16),
however, I would have voted for Rob Smith of the Right to Life Party.
This, despite the fact that I blame Mario Cuomo for leaving my beautiful
state in the economic dustbin while the rest of the country has passed us
by. (Thus, why I am living in exile in Maryland.)
Quite simply, protecting human life is of the utmost importance to me, and
I could not vote for a pro-choice candidate any more than I could vote for
David Duke, no matter what either would think on the "other issues." More
importantly, having a Republican who is soft on life issues is absolutely
lethal to my agenda, as there is no chance of getting a pro-life
officeholder until the Republican is defeated, and then a new Republican
can defeat the new Democratic incumbent.
Besides, I think you can make a pretty credible case that we truly don't
know what Gore *really* thinks on just about anything. In Congress, Gore
had a perfect rating from the NRA, and a strong pro-life rating. Just
eight years ago, Gore was mopping the floor with Ross Perot on the issue of
free trade. Every day and every debate seems to produce a new Al Gore.
The other day he was trying to paint himself as the candidate of "small
government!" Say what you will about Bush, though, but he has stuck to
an unpopular tax cut plan and an unpopular Social Security plan EVEN
AGAINST THE RECOMENDATION OF HIS OWN ADVISORS.
Finally, win or lose, the next administration is not going to be so bad.
Both houses of Congress are going to be dividied right down the pipe, which
will make it nearly impossible to accomplish anything extreme. There is a
broad consensus in America right now as to exactly what kind of government
we want, and our system is going to ensure that we get it.
