This is the main weakness of the winner take all system. It doesnt account
for the overall will of the people. The system works well enough when
someone gains a clear majority.....actually it works great under those
conditions. But in very close elections there are too many ......ahem
"losers" for "the will of the people" to be carried out in any meaningful
way.
I'm not going to suggest that we change our methods to any great degree. But
I dont think I will ever look at elections the same way again.
This has been an extreme eye opener.
