Oh yes! It is wonderfully written once you get inside that world, and quite
brilliant. One good technique is to read something even more depressing and
oppressive, and then switch to _1984_ for a light, uplifting treat. I
forgot one more book from the list of books I gave up at the halfway point:
_Naked Lunch_ by William "Uncle Junky" S. Burroughs. That book is NASTY
stuff, and I put it down at exactly halfway, and found _1984_ was quite
cheery compared. Though I still sorta intend on finishing the Burroughs . .
. when my poor distraught brain is more stable and can handle it.
