I'd really like to see a reference that validates this statement. It's my
guess that cultural or ethnic or racial or economic differences that cause
civil disturbances. The most violent civil disturbances we've had in my
lifetime have been ghetto riots. And the electoral college sure didn't help
prevent what is still probably the bloodiest civil war ever. In fact, if you
think about it, having given the rural South disproportionate power in the
early years of our country probably strengthened/validated their slave based
economic system and made the problem more difficult to solve once it came to a
head.
All that the EC insures is that rural people from a dirt farmer in Alabama to
an Aleut in Alaska, people with absolutely nothing in common other than the
fact that they live in sparsely populated areas, have disproportionate power
in the presidential election.
