That's very true. What my original point was that despite, or rather
*because* of these changes, certain things become interesting by their
omission, particularly how Star Trek is held up by its fans to be, for lack
of a better expression, the social conscience of the future.
In light of that, I thought it was ironic that in a future where romantic
liasons with aliens (which even today might be called miscegenation by some)
is not uncommon, we've never seen even a peripheral character in what is
these days still often considered an unacceptable relationship.

That's true, I'd say. It's not statistically that far out of the ordinary,
esp. since I agree with your assertion that 10% homosexuality in the
population is likely to be an overestimate.
Again, in light of the various ST shows willingness to tackle social issues
from a generally liberal POV, it seems odd that they've avoided this one
like a skunked dog. Particularly in light of the way TV has, if not
embraced gays, at least gotten them on its radar, it's strikes me as funny
how Star Trek, a show whose original incarnation received kudos for its
position on many issues, has avoided them.
