hi guys,
ok, a little about myself ... now that i've jumped in the deep end of the pool
:-)

im still a relative youngster i suppose ... i'll hit the quarter century mark
later this year ... i live in Adelaide, South Australia - a beautiful little
city, population around 1 million. Adelaide's (and SA in general) most noted for
its wine, churches, rapidly aging population, bad drivers :-) and its ability to
elect one inept government after another (our current state government seems to
be so inept, they cant even stuff things up properly (whats new)) and most
importantly, we have the best cricket ground in the world!!

since i finished studying a couple of years ago, i've been working in a research
lab in the Physiology Lab at Adelaide University. Our research group is
investigating fetal growth and development, and in particular the impact of poor
fetal development on adult life. We know alot about what happens - due to the
many hundreds of epidemiological studies in humans, and thousands of animal
studies, but the how (especially at the molecular level of genes and proteins
and hormones etc) is still mostly an unknown ... which is where the lab i work
in fits in - we're trying to examine the molecular mechanisms involved in the
development and early post natal life of the fetal adrenal gland. (its a small
lab - just myself and my supervisor at the moment ... and if anyone from the
Australian National Health and Medical Research Council is reading - we need
more money please, so we can employ some more people, or get some slaves (oops,
i meant students, hehe) in !! :-) )

I've read SF since i was probably 7 or 8 - perhaps not as much as i'd like, due
to the inadequacies of the local library, and well, sometimes life gets in the
way too :-) , and discovered D Brin a couple of years ago - and yes, i had
noticed that occasionally something relevent to Brin sneaks in on this list :-)
although reading about all the other stuff going is lots of fun too!

Mark.
