So far as I know, Outback Steakhouse has nothing to do with Australia or
Australian cuisine. It is basically American food given stupid Australian
names. Probably has staff trained to say "g'day" at the drop of a hat. I
remember an article in Salon a while back about them.

Actually, here it is:

and it's worse than I remembered. "Shrooms" as an abbreviation for
mushrooms. Blech. Obviously no Australian was involved at all in that
restaurant chain.

The New York "Eight Mile Creek*" restaurant does sound much more authentic -
yabbies, yummm - with its use of a mix of Australian food ingredients and
multi-regional cooking styles. Bit of Asian, bit of Italy and France, bit of
Ireland. Like the States and Canada, we're a very multicultural country.

* Eight Mile Creek is a quintessential Aussie name. When driving anywhere
you'll every so often cross a bridge over some dried up straggly bit of
water with a sign saying "Six Mile Creek" or whatever number, up to about
11. Quite often, on the one road two thirds of any number of bridges will be
over a something-mile creek. I can only assume the earlier pioneers were
challenged for names at the time.
