I think the objections to John's phrase "acting on principle" are sort
of missing the point.  I think he means that their principles were that
they hated Clinton and his actions and wanted to destroy him because
they thought he was bad for the country.  

Just because someone's principles aren't yours doesn't mean they don't
have principles.  

In this case, the pro-impeachment crowd voted for impeachment not
because they felt they would get more votes for choosing impeachment,
but because they wanted to get Bill Clinton.  That means that they were
not acting out of partisan advantage, but out of "principle", the
principle being that Bill Clinton was evil.
