I might point out John was refering to the fact that the average
Chinese citizen has to be very careful about what they say in public. 
You can't ask them what they think about their government and hope to
get a truthful answer.  There are plenty of countries where this is
true...Saudi Arabia, China, Cuba, Nth Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria....

One more thing.  

I would ask that certain people tone down their rhetoric.  Personal
insults have no place on this list.  If you feel the need to flame
someone, perhaps you should wait a day or so before sending and see if
you still feel as angry.  I imagine that even when you feel the same
way you'll still find a better way to phrase things that makes your
point more clearly.  Remember that your audience is not just the person
you are responding to, but the rest of us.
