Now, if you know why he was almost always technically "out of uniform"* 
while on the bridge, that would be pitiful.  Or else you team would always 
win "Star Trek" trivia contests . . .

(*No, it was not for the same reason that his successor JTK was frequently 
out of his uniform.)
