That's the Constitution class Enterprise. Captain Sam
Beckett (or whatever the heck the new character's name
is ;-) ) is captain of an older Enterprise ship.
According to the background stuff I remember from the
shows and the Trek Encyclopedia, there were several
ships named Enterprise: a sailing ship, the nuclear
wessel -- err-- aircraft carrier, the space shuttle,
the original Trek Enterprise, and the Ents A-E (updated
Constitution class, Excelsior class, Ambassador class,
Galaxy class, and I forget the new one's class.)
Apparently, the new show is slipping another starship
in there between the shuttle and the TOS Enterprise.
So, they're adding an extra starship, not an extra
captain. :-)
Based on the little glimpses I've seen of the new
show's ship, it doesn't look much like an old Trek
ship, fitting between Cochrane's ship in First Contact
and the Constitution class Enterprise. For one thing,
shouldn't it have the old-timey warp nacelles that the
Enterprise and the old shuttles had, with that simple
rounded cylinder shape?
