The World Trade Center is a symbol of the American financial system, and
thus also, capitalism.
10% of all of the office space on Wall St. is in the buildings. Morgan
Stanley had 50 floors in the building (it was not, however, their
headquarters - these were support offices.) Many other major banks had a
great deal of space available.
Additionally, the WTC is *the* most distinctive portion of the NYC skyline,
and that is very psychologically demoralizing - along with the damage to
offices and thousands killed. Wall St. may well be shut down for quite
some time. Already, an adjacent building is gone to the ground, and
others will likely go also.
