Actually, I think you're being much too kind to Fukuyama, who in my mind was 
not writing a serious philosophical or historical treatise but was rather 
beating the drum for the Reagan era as the culmination of human achievement. 
A kind of hackery in which he deliberately did not try to conceive of any 
possible challenge to his triumphalistic apotheosis.

But at this point I think we're basically talking past each other, since you 
want to agree with Fukuyama's conclusion and I want to point out that he's 
only the latest of a long line of people to posit the end of history and get 
it totally wrong.
