I don't know how it is Down Under, but here in the US, Field Hockey is
considered to be almost exclusively a girl's sport. Occasionally, a High
School will field a male player, but that's a rarity. And unlike other
"girl's sports" like Gymnastics and Volleyball, I'm not sure that any of
our colleges even compete in men's field hockey.
Also, in the Eastern United States, both sexes play lacrosse - the national
game of the Iroquois Nation.
JDG - Who, when it comes to girls and hockey, much prefers tonsil hockey to
field or ice...... ;-)
