In the State of New York, 9th grade Social Studies covers the history of
Latin America, Africa, and South Asia (Pakistan to Japan) from the earliest
beginnings of civilization to the present.

In the 10th grade, the history of the Middle East and Russia is covered in
approximately half of a semester, followed by a semester and a half on
European History.

At the end of 10th grade, all students must pass a statewide Regents Exam
on material from both years.

I think that its a pretty good system.
