Beane played ball. He was with the A's briefly at the end of 
his carreer (1989). Prior to that he played with the Mets 
the Twins and the Tigers in his six year pro career.   He 
then scouted for The A's and was taken under Sandy 
Alderson's wing, taking over for him when Alderson left.  I 
think Alderson was one of the best GMs as well.
