At the risk of repeating myself... Yes, Gautam is making a good argument.
However, it's not the one that Cheney and Ashcroft are making. I think it
is exactly what they should be saying, for multiple reasons. One, it will
show the world that we are responding to circumstances and we don't think
that American justice is only for American citizens. Two, it would force us
to deliberate about what the circumstances are when this kind of action is
necessary. Three, we'll have a much better idea of when it is not, so that
we can restrain those who would inhibit freedom by applying such measures
too often and broadly.
I'm afraid Cheney and Ashcroft are saying, essentially, we know we're right,
so we'll do whatever we want. That kind of arrogance is bad. Evil, even.
I'm certain it seems that way to much of the rest of the world.
