In one box you can purchase a power supply, case, motherboard with 
processor(s), keyboard, CD-Rom or DVD-Rom, mouse and speakers and then 
purchase separately and install the hard drive(s), memory and monitor. 

Very convenient.  When my last computer died I bought a kit and transferred 
my old peripherals.  The price for the kit was somewhere between $250 and 
$400 depending on how powerful you wanted to get.  I paid $279+NYS tax for 
mine last fall (2000): a P3 600mhz.
