You don't need to do all that. In IrfanView, go to
Options|Properties, click the extensions tab, then
you can just check off the formats you want IrfanView
to open. It will then open the files you want without
you having to go through the whole Windows rigamarole
of assigning extensions.

That functionality is one of the many reasons I love
IrfanView...
