You ain't stupid, yer jest ignorant.  :)  Ignorance can be cured with
information.

I've heard about an incident or two where my father-in-law called my
husband "stupid" because he didn't know something that my FiL thought he
ought to.  At least one of those was something that *should* have been
taught by my FiL.  I don't think he'll call any of his grandchildren
"stupid" for not knowing something, but if one of my kids comes back
from Grandpa's upset that Grandpa called him (or, hypothetically on some
yet-to-be-conceived daughter, she) "stupid", I'm going to tell him (or
her) to tell him next time, "I'm not stupid, I'm ignorant.  Teach me so
I won't be ignorant about this."

(The worst incident of my husband being "stupid" happened a few months
after we got married, and it turned out that my husband was right, and
his father was wrong.  I don't believe my husband has been "stupid" on
any occasion since then.)
