I don't know if this will help, but what I'd do is:

* find an icon for one of these to right-click on

* right-click on the icon and select "Open file with" or whatever the
option is for that sort of thing

* select the program you want to open it with

* select the checkbox that indicates you want to use that program to
open that sort of file every time

It might "take" better using this method, I don't know for sure, but
that's what I'd tell my mom to try next if she were having this problem.
